PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a natural derivative of your own blood. Platelets, along with red and white blood cells, are a component of your blood.

Platelets play a role in clotting your blood when you have an injury, and they also contribute healing compounds and growth factors when rushed into a site that needs repair.

PRP is made from a sample of your own blood. The medical assistant draws a routine sample from a vein in your arm and then processes it in a centrifuge to spin down the platelets. An aesthetician or physician then uses this concentrated compound during microneedling to improve your skin, via injection if treating the face, or as part of a scalp treatment to wake up dormant hair follicles.

How do you apply PRP treatments?

The team at Southwest Michigan Dermatology uses PRP for several different cosmetic treatments.

Hair regrowth

When applied to key areas of your scalp where you are experiencing hair loss, PRP can awaken dormant follicles to boost your hairs’ thickness and growth.

PRP for hair loss is most effective as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia, which typically causes hair follicles to shrink. You may know this condition as male pattern baldness.

Facial rejuvenation

PRP applied to your skin after a microneedling session restores a younger, brighter look to your complexion. The microneedling creates mini wounds that respond to the concentrated healing power of the platelets. The microchannels resulting from microneedling allow the PRP to sink deeply into your skin.

Facial rejuvenation with PRP can address aging concerns, acne scarring, and improve skin texture.

How many PRP treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you’ll need depends on your cosmetic goals.

For hair loss, you’ll need at least three initial sessions spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.

You’ll then schedule regular maintenance sessions to maintain your thicker, fuller hair.

Skin rejuvenation results are noticeable after just one microneedling and PRP session, but you get the best results after 2-6 total treatments. The team at Southwest Michigan Dermatology advises you on the best way to achieve your best results.
